See also: Psalms 139:16 Isaiah 49:1 Galatians 1:15-16 Psalms 71:5-6 Romans 8:29 On verse 5: God's call of Jeremiah reaches back before his birth: 'Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee...I ordained thee a prophet.' When the young man protests that he cannot speak, the LORD answers not with flattery but with presence: 'Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee.' The passage steadies every reluctant servant, for the call rests on God's purpose and presence, not the messenger's strength.
