Strengthened in the Waiting
In seasons of waiting, God's faithfulness is our anchor. He strengthens our hearts as we trust in His goodness.
The psalmist David, in the midst of his trials, declares a profound truth: "I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living" (Psalms 27:13). Here, David acknowledges the frailty of human strength and the sustaining power of faith in God's goodness. It is this belief that prevents him from despairing.
The Goodness of the Lord
David's confidence rests in the assurance that he will witness the goodness of the Lord. The Hebrew word for "goodness" is ṭûb H2898, which encompasses beauty, gladness, and welfare. This is not a vague hope but a firm expectation that God's benevolence will manifest in his life. David's faith is not in a distant, abstract deity but in a personal God who acts in the "land of the living."
This idea of seeing God's goodness is echoed in Psalms 31:19, "Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!" Here, the psalmist celebrates the tangible acts of God's kindness towards those who revere Him.
Waiting on the Lord
The call to "wait on the LORD" (Psalms 27:14) is a recurring theme in Scripture. The Hebrew word qâvâh H6960 suggests an active waiting, a hopeful anticipation. It is not a passive resignation but a confident expectation of God's intervention. Isaiah 40:31 reinforces this promise: "But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."
In waiting, we are called to "be of good courage." The Hebrew word 'âmats H553 means to be alert and steadfast. This courage is not self-derived but is a gift from God, as He "shall strengthen thine heart." The word châzaq H2388 indicates a divine fortification, a strengthening that enables us to endure.
The Strength of God in Our Weakness
Paul echoes this sentiment in 2 Corinthians 12:9, where he writes, "My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness." Here, the apostle Paul finds strength in the sufficiency of God's grace, recognizing that divine power is most evident when human strength fails.
This theme of divine strength is further explored in Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." The believer's ability to endure and overcome is rooted in Christ's empowering presence.
A Call to Patience and Trust
Waiting on the Lord is a call to patience and trust. Lamentations 3:26 reminds us, "It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD." This quiet waiting is not marked by anxiety but by a deep trust in God's timing and purposes.
In our own seasons of waiting, we are invited to trust in God's faithfulness. Just as David found strength in the assurance of God's goodness, we too can rest in the promise that God is working all things for our good (Romans 8:28).
Application: Living in the Light of God's Faithfulness
As we navigate the uncertainties of life, let us hold fast to the promise of God's goodness. When we are tempted to despair, let us remember David's declaration of faith. We are called to actively wait, to courageously trust, and to find strength in the Lord.
In practical terms, this means cultivating a heart of gratitude, even in the waiting. It means seeking God's face in prayer and immersing ourselves in His Word. It means encouraging one another with the hope we have in Christ.
A Closing Call
Beloved, let us "wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD" (Psalms 27:14). In every season, may we find our strength in the faithfulness of our God, who never fails to fulfill His promises.
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your goodness and faithfulness. In our seasons of waiting, strengthen our hearts and renew our courage. Help us to trust in Your perfect timing and to see Your goodness in the land of the living. In Jesus' name, amen.
