Working Heartily for the Lord

Working Heartily for the Lord

on Colossians 3:23-24

In all our endeavors, we are called to serve Christ with our whole heart, knowing our true reward comes from Him.

Working with Heart and Purpose

"And whatsoever ye do, do [it] heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men" (Colossians 3:23). Here, Paul invites us into a life where every action, every task, is infused with divine purpose. Whether we are engaged in grand projects or mundane chores, the call is to do it heartily — with sincerity and enthusiasm, as if the Lord Himself were our direct supervisor.

The Greek word for "heartily" is derived from psuche G5590, which refers to the breath or spirit. It suggests that our work should be infused with life and spirit, not merely performed out of obligation or for human recognition. This aligns with the wisdom of Ecclesiastes 9:10, "Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do [it] with thy might." Our work is not merely a means to an end but a spiritual act of worship.

Serving the Lord Christ

Paul continues, "Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ" (Colossians 3:24). The assurance of a heavenly reward transforms our earthly labor. Our inheritance is not of this world; it is a divine promise, echoing the words of Ephesians 6:8, "Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether [he be] bond or free."

The Greek term antapodosis G469 refers to a recompense or reward. This is not a transactional reward but a gracious gift from God, who sees and values our faithfulness. The emphasis here is on serving Christ, not merely fulfilling duties for human masters. This perspective shifts our focus from earthly recognition to divine approval.

The Heart of a Servant

To serve "the Lord Christ" (Colossians 3:24) is to align our will with His, as seen in Romans 14:8: "For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's." Our allegiance is to Christ, transcending earthly hierarchies and expectations.

This call to servanthood is echoed in Ephesians 6:6, "Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart." The Greek word douleuo G1398 means to serve as a slave, emphasizing total devotion and commitment. Our service is not conditional or superficial but rooted in a deep, abiding relationship with Christ.

The Doctrine of Inheritance

This passage touches on the doctrine of inheritance, a key theme throughout Scripture. Our inheritance is not earned by works but granted through grace, as highlighted in Acts 20:32, "And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified."

This inheritance is both present and future, a promise of eternal life and a present reality of living in God's kingdom. It is a reminder that our ultimate reward is not found in this world but in the eternal presence of God.

Application: Living Out Our Calling

In our daily lives, this passage calls us to examine our motivations and attitudes toward work. Are we working for human approval, or are we serving Christ? This perspective challenges us to approach every task, no matter how small, with the intention of glorifying God.

Consider your workplace or home. How can you infuse your daily tasks with a sense of divine purpose? Perhaps it means offering a kind word to a colleague, approaching a challenging project with prayer, or simply performing your duties with integrity and diligence.

A Call to Serve

As we conclude, let us remember that our work is an opportunity to serve the Lord Christ. In every task, we are invited to reflect His love and grace, knowing that our true reward is from Him. Let us commit to working heartily, with our whole heart, as an act of worship and devotion.

May we find joy and fulfillment in serving our Lord, trusting in His promise of an eternal inheritance.

In Jesus' name, amen.

Let us pray.

Heavenly Father, help us to work with all our hearts, as serving You, not men. Remind us of the eternal inheritance You promise. May our labor reflect Your love and grace. In Jesus' name, amen.
