The Call to Train a Child

"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6) These words from Proverbs are not merely a suggestion but a profound truth about the shaping of a life. The Hebrew word for "train" here is chânak H2596, which carries the sense of dedicating or initiating. It is about setting a child on a path, a course of life that is aligned with wisdom and righteousness.

This verse speaks directly to the heart of every parent and guardian. It assures us that the early years are foundational, that what is instilled in a child will endure through the years. The promise is clear: when the child is old, he will not depart from it. This is not a guarantee of perfection, but a reassurance of the enduring impact of godly training.

The Way He Should Go

The phrase "the way he should go" is rich with meaning. The word "way" is translated from derek H1870, which means a road or a course of life. It suggests a journey, a manner of living that is consistent and purposeful. The way a child should go is not a narrow set of rules but a life oriented towards God.

Ephesians 6:4 echoes this sentiment, urging fathers not to provoke their children to wrath but to bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. This nurturing is a gentle guiding, a constant pointing towards the Lord's ways.

A Legacy of Faith

Training a child in the way he should go is not a task left to chance. Deuteronomy 6:7 instructs us to teach God's commandments diligently to our children, to talk of them in our homes, and as we go about our daily lives. This diligent teaching is a legacy of faith, passed down from generation to generation.

Psalm 78:3 reminds us of the stories and teachings we have heard and known, which our fathers have told us. This is the heritage of faith that we are called to pass on, ensuring that the next generation knows the works and ways of the Lord.

The Role of Scripture

The importance of Scripture in a child's life cannot be overstated. 2 Timothy 3:15 speaks of Timothy, who from a child knew the holy scriptures, which were able to make him wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. The Scriptures are a lamp and a guide, shaping the heart and mind of a child towards wisdom and salvation.

The Doctrine of Divine Guidance

This passage touches on the doctrine of divine guidance. God, in His providence, has given us the responsibility to guide the young in His ways. It is a partnership with the divine, where we plant seeds of faith and trust God for the growth.

Just as Abraham was known for commanding his children to keep the way of the Lord (Genesis 18:19), we too are called to lead by example, ensuring that our children understand the justice and judgment of God.

Application: Living the Promise

How do we apply this in our lives today? First, we must be intentional in our teaching. It is not enough to hope our children will absorb faith by osmosis. We must actively teach, model, and live the truths of Scripture.

Second, we must be patient. The growth of a child in wisdom and stature is a gradual process. Like Samuel, who grew in favor with the Lord and men (1 Samuel 2:26), our children need time and space to grow.

Finally, we must pray. Our efforts are not enough without the grace and power of God. We are reminded in 1 Samuel 1:28 of the dedication of Samuel to the Lord, a life lent to God for His purposes.

A Closing Call

Let us embrace the sacred duty of training up our children. Let us trust in the promise that when they are old, they will not depart from the path of righteousness. This is not just about raising good citizens but about nurturing souls for the kingdom of God.

May we be faithful in this calling, knowing that God is with us, guiding us as we guide the little ones He has entrusted to our care.

Let us pray.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the children You have entrusted to us. Help us to train them in the way they should go, with wisdom and love. May Your Word be a light to their path, and may they grow in favor with You and with others. In Jesus' name, amen.
