A Life of Learning and Declaration

O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works. (Psalms 71:17)

The psalmist begins with a profound acknowledgment of God's enduring instruction throughout life. From the days of youth, the psalmist has been a student of the Almighty's ways, learning and declaring His wondrous works. The Hebrew word for "taught" here is lâmad H3925, which conveys the idea of being goaded or instructed diligently. It is a reminder that our spiritual education is not passive but an active engagement with God's truth.

This verse draws a parallel with Psalms 119:102, where the psalmist affirms, "I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me." The continuity of learning and declaring God's works is a lifelong journey. As we reflect on the psalmist's words, we are reminded that our testimony of God's faithfulness is not confined to a single season of life.

The Cry of the Aged

Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto [this] generation, [and] thy power to every one [that] is to come. (Psalms 71:18)

In the twilight of life, the psalmist's plea is for God's continued presence and strength. The Hebrew term for "old and grayheaded" is sêybâh H7872, denoting the physical signs of aging. Yet, even as strength wanes, the psalmist's desire to declare God's might remains undiminished.

This plea echoes earlier in the chapter, "Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth" (Psalms 71:9). It is a heartfelt cry for God not to abandon him in his vulnerability but to empower him to testify to the next generation.

The desire to pass on the knowledge of God's power is a recurring theme in Scripture. Psalms 78:4 declares, "We will not hide [them] from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done." The psalmist's heart beats with the same rhythm, longing to ensure that God's strength is known to all who follow.

God's Faithfulness Across Generations

The psalmist's longing to declare God's strength to future generations is not just a personal wish but a divine mandate. Isaiah 46:4 reassures us, "And [even] to [your] old age I [am] he; and [even] to hoar hairs will I carry [you]: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver [you]." God's faithfulness is not limited by time or age; He is the same God who carries us through every stage of life.

This truth is further illuminated in Psalms 145:4, "One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts." The continuity of God's praise from one generation to the next is a testament to His enduring faithfulness and power.

The Doctrine of God's Providence

The passage touches on the doctrine of God's providence, His sovereign care and guidance throughout our lives. From youth to old age, God is actively involved in our journey. His providence assures us that our lives are not random but are under His divine orchestration.

Providence is the assurance that "all things work together for good to them that love God" (Romans 8:28). The psalmist's life, marked by God's teaching and declaration of His works, is a testament to this truth. Even in old age, the psalmist trusts in God's continued guidance and presence.

Application: Living as Witnesses in Our Later Years

How does this passage land on our lives today? As we age, the temptation might be to retreat into the background, feeling that our usefulness has waned. Yet, the psalmist's words challenge us to remain active witnesses of God's strength.

Consider how you might continue to declare God's power in your own context. This could be through sharing stories of His faithfulness with younger generations, mentoring, or simply living a life that reflects His love and grace. Remember, your testimony is unique and valuable, a beacon of hope and faith.

A Closing Call to Faithfulness

In our twilight years, let us echo the psalmist's prayer: "O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto [this] generation, [and] thy power to every one [that] is to come." May we be vessels of His grace, declaring His mighty works to all who will listen.

Let us trust in His providence, knowing that He carries us through every season of life. Our God, who has taught us from our youth, will not abandon us in our old age. Instead, He empowers us to be His witnesses, proclaiming His strength and power to the generations yet to come.

Let us pray.

O God, you have taught us from our youth, and now in our old age, we ask you not to forsake us. Help us to declare your strength and power to the generations to come. May our lives be a testament to your faithfulness. In Jesus' name, amen.
