Asking for Wisdom in Faith
on James 1:5-8
In times of uncertainty, God invites us to ask for wisdom with unwavering faith.
The Generous Gift of Wisdom
"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all [men] liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." (James 1:5) These words from James remind us of the open invitation from our Heavenly Father to seek wisdom. In a world filled with confusion and doubt, wisdom is more precious than ever. God, who gives generously and without reproach, stands ready to bestow this gift upon those who ask.
The Greek word for wisdom, sophia G4678, encompasses both worldly and spiritual understanding. It is not merely knowledge but the ability to apply that knowledge in a way that aligns with God's will. This wisdom is a gift from God, who gives liberally, or haplos G574, meaning bountifully. He does not scold us for our lack but delights in our asking.
Asking in Faith
"But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed." (James 1:6) Faith is the foundation upon which our request for wisdom must rest. To ask in faith means to trust in the character and promises of God. It is a steadfast assurance that God hears and answers.
Jesus emphasized this kind of faith in Matthew 21:21, where He taught that faith without doubt can move mountains. Similarly, Hebrews 11:6 tells us that without faith, it is impossible to please God, for we must believe that He exists and rewards those who earnestly seek Him.
The imagery of a wave, driven and tossed by the wind, illustrates the instability of doubt. The Greek word diakrino G1252, translated as "wavering," suggests a separation or division within oneself. It is a lack of settled conviction, much like the double-minded man James describes as unstable in all his ways.
The Peril of Double-Mindedness
"A double minded man [is] unstable in all his ways." (James 1:8) The danger of being double-minded, or dipsuchos G1374, is profound. It speaks to a divided heart, one that vacillates between faith and doubt, between God and the world. This instability affects every aspect of life, leading to a lack of direction and purpose.
Jesus addressed this in Matthew 6:24, stating that no one can serve two masters. We must choose whom we will serve, for divided allegiance leads to spiritual instability. Elijah's challenge to the people in 1 Kings 18:21 echoes this call to decisiveness: "How long halt ye between two opinions?"
Wisdom and the Fear of the Lord
The pursuit of wisdom is deeply connected to the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 9:10 tells us, "The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy [is] understanding." This reverent awe of God aligns our hearts with His, opening the door to true wisdom.
James further illuminates this in James 3:17, describing wisdom from above as pure, peaceable, gentle, and full of mercy and good fruits. It is wisdom that reflects the character of God and leads to a life that honors Him.
Application: Seeking Wisdom Today
In our daily lives, we face countless decisions and challenges. The call to seek wisdom is as relevant now as it was in James's time. We are invited to approach God with confidence, knowing that He hears us. As John 15:7 assures us, "If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you."
Let us cultivate a heart that seeks God first, trusting in His provision and guidance. When we ask for wisdom, let us do so with a faith that does not waver, confident in the God who gives generously.
A Call to Trust
In the midst of life's uncertainties, may we turn to God, the source of all wisdom. Let us ask with boldness and faith, trusting that He will provide what we need. As we do, we will find stability and peace, rooted in the unwavering love of our Heavenly Father.
Let us draw near to God, and He will draw near to us. In His presence, we find the wisdom and strength to navigate life's journey with grace and courage.
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, we come before You acknowledging our need for wisdom. We ask in faith, trusting in Your generous and loving nature. Help us to be steadfast, unwavering in our trust in You. Guide us with Your wisdom, that we may walk in Your ways. In Jesus' name, amen.
