The Unshakeable Kingdom

on Hebrews 12:25-29

In a world that trembles, we find our footing in the kingdom that cannot be moved.

Listen
See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more [shall not] we [escape], if we turn away from him that [speaketh] from heaven. (Hebrews 12:25)

The voice that spoke from heaven is not one to ignore. It echoes with the authority of creation itself, a voice that once shook the earth and promises to shake the heavens too. The writer of Hebrews urges us to listen, to not turn away, for what is at stake is profound: the foundation of a kingdom that cannot be moved.

Imagine standing at the foot of Mount Sinai, the ground quaking beneath as the Lord descended in fire. The smoke rose like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain trembled greatly (Exodus 19:18). The Israelites could not endure the command that even a beast touching the mountain should be stoned. Moses himself trembled with fear. Yet now, we are invited not to a mountain that can be touched, but to Mount Zion, the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem.

This kingdom is unshakeable. The Greek word asaleutos G761 captures this immovability, a stark contrast to the transient and fragile kingdoms of this world. As the prophet Haggai declared,
