What Cannot Be Shaken?
In a world where everything seems uncertain, what truly remains unshakeable?
What in your life feels steady? What seems unshakeable? We all long for stability, yet the world around us often feels like shifting sand. The writer of Hebrews speaks to this longing, pointing to a kingdom that cannot be moved.
Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. (Hebrews 12:26)
The shaking of the earth is not a new phenomenon. God's voice has shaken the earth before. Remember Mount Sinai, where "the whole mount quaked greatly" (Exodus 19:18). But the promise here is that God will shake "not the earth only, but also heaven." This is a shaking of cosmic proportions.
Why does God shake things? The purpose is clear: "that those things which cannot be shaken may remain" (Hebrews 12:27). The Greek word saleuo G4531 means to agitate or disturb. God shakes to reveal what is truly secure. This is not a threat, but a promise of clarity. The temporary gives way to the eternal.
Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: (Hebrews 12:28)
We are receiving a kingdom that is unshakeable. This is not just a future hope but a present reality. The kingdom of God is here, amidst the chaos, offering stability and peace. As we walked through "The Unshakeable Kingdom" last week, we were reminded of Daniel's vision: "the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed" (Daniel 2:44).
What does this mean for us? It means we live with grace, serving God "acceptably with reverence and godly fear." The Greek word charis G5485 speaks of divine influence upon the heart. It is by grace that we serve, not out of obligation, but out of gratitude.
The passage ends with a sobering reminder: "For our God is a consuming fire" (Hebrews 12:29). This echoes Deuteronomy 4:24, "For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God." God's holiness is not to be taken lightly. His fire purifies, but it also consumes what is not of Him.
This brings us to a tension we cannot ignore. God's kingdom is unshakeable, yet His fire consumes. How do we reconcile these truths? Perhaps we are not meant to resolve this tension too neatly. We hold both realities in our hearts, living with a reverence that acknowledges God's power and grace.
Do you live as if God's kingdom is unshakeable? Or do you find yourself swayed by the world's instability? The call is clear: "Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling" (Psalms 2:11).
So, what cannot be shaken? God's kingdom. His promises. His love. These remain amidst the shaking. As you ponder this, consider one concrete act: write down one area of your life that feels unstable and bring it before God. Trust Him with it. Let His unshakeable kingdom be your foundation.
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, we come before You acknowledging the shaking in our lives. Help us to trust in Your unshakeable kingdom. Grant us grace to serve You with reverence and godly fear. Consume what is not of You, and let Your eternal promises remain in our hearts. In Jesus' name, amen.
