Singing Hymns in the Face of Persecution
Many long for peace, yet the world often offers trials. In Jiangyou, China, this truth was starkly illuminated when armed police officers stormed a Sunday service of the Early Rain Covenant Church. On that day, more than 30 congregants, including children, were rounded up for interrogation. The incident, which occurred midway through their worship, serves as a somber reminder of the trials faced by Christians in parts of the world, including the ongoing Christian persecution in China, where faith is seen as a threat.

It was on a recent Sunday that the congregation gathered in a hotel ballroom, their voices lifted in song, when the peace was shattered by the arrival of at least 50 police officers. The officers, armed and stern, interrupted the service, forcibly taking away the church's leaders, Yan Hong and Wu Wuqing, along with others. Despite the chaos, the congregants continued to sing hymns and pray, standing firm in their faith even as they were moved to the Jiangyou detention center.

Why does this happen? The Chinese Communist Party's grip on religion is notoriously tight, viewing unsanctioned worship as a threat to state control. The Early Rain Covenant Church, founded in 2008 in Chengdu, has been under scrutiny since its inception. Its founding pastor, Wang Yi, has been imprisoned since 2018 for charges of "inciting subversion of state power" and "illegal business operations." The recent detainment of Yan and Wu, though shrouded in unclear charges, echoes this ongoing struggle between faith and authority, highlighting the reality of Christian persecution in China.

Yet, in the face of such trials, the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:10 come to life:

"Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:10)

These words remind us that persecution for righteousness is not a curse, but a blessing. It is a testament to the strength of faith that refuses to bow to earthly powers.

As the congregants of Early Rain Covenant Church continued to sing and pray, even as officers shouted for them to cease, they embodied the very essence of steadfast faith. Their actions ask us a question: How do we respond when our faith is tested? Do we shrink back, or do we stand firm, trusting that God's kingdom is greater than any earthly power?

This incident in Jiangyou is not isolated. It is part of a broader pattern of increased pressure on underground churches in China, where the Communist Party seeks to control religious expression. Yet, the faith of these believers remains unyielding, a beacon of hope and courage amidst the Christian persecution in China.

As we reflect on their courage, let us be moved to pray for those who face persecution for their beliefs. May we find inspiration in their example to stand firm in our own faith, whatever trials we may face. Let us remember that in every act of faithfulness, we draw closer to the kingdom of heaven.
