The project would use a $10 million appropriation state lawmakers approved a year ago for a reproductive health facility in northern New Mexico. That funding follows the same pattern as UNM's first such project: a $10 million abortion center now under construction in Las Cruces, financed through House Bill 450 during the 2025 legislative session. Lawmakers amended that same bill again in 2026 to permit the money to be spent on acquiring land, clearing the legal path for UNM to pursue a second location.
Elisa Martinez, executive director of the New Mexico Alliance for Life, has spoken out against the expansion, urging residents of San Miguel County, of which Las Vegas is the county seat, to oppose the buildout before it advances further. New Mexicans marked a Statewide Day of Prayer on September 12, asking that the project be stopped.
No construction date has been announced, and UNM has not named a specific parcel. But the money is appropriated, the legislative language has been widened to allow a land purchase, and the university's own leadership has now said out loud which town it wants. In a state that already has no gestational limit on abortion, the machinery for a second facility is moving forward one legislative session at a time.
What a State Builds Tells You What It Believes
Every government spends money on what it has decided matters. A road says a state believes in commerce. A school says it believes a child is worth educating. And when a legislature sets aside ten million dollars — twice — to build a facility whose purpose is to end a life before it draws its first breath, that spending says something too, whether the officials involved will say it plainly or not.Here is the plain truth Scripture will not let go of: the child in the womb is not a project, not a policy line, not tissue to be managed. He is a person, already known, already named, before any bureaucrat has drawn up a blueprint or broken any ground.
"For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb." (Psalm 139:13)
The Lord does not wait for a birth certificate to start loving a child. He is knitting that life together in secret, in the dark, before anyone else in the world has laid eyes on him. That is not sentiment. That is what the Bible says plainly, in the same book where the psalmist goes on to say he is fearfully and wonderfully made.
Scripture says the same of the prophet Jeremiah, and it was not a compliment reserved for one man alone:
"Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee." (Jeremiah 1:5)
You will not hear that verse quoted at a groundbreaking ceremony. But it stands regardless of what gets built on that ground. A state can appropriate money, amend a bill, and pick a town. It cannot appropriate the truth about who made that child and why.
My friend, if you have walked through an abortion yourself, hear this before anything else: the same God who knit that child together is the God who sent His Son to bear every sin, including this one, on a cross. There is no life too broken, no choice too dark, for the blood of Jesus Christ to reach. He does not turn away the woman who comes to Him grieving. He receives her.
And if you are simply watching this story unfold from a distance, wondering whether it is any of your business — it is. Every soul in that county, born and unborn, official and taxpayer, bears the image of God. That is not a talking point. It is the reason this story matters at all, long after the ribbon has been cut and the cameras have gone home.
