Overton has spent more than three years at the America First Policy Institute and, since January 2025, has served as deputy assistant to the president for domestic policy. She holds a doctorate in clinical investigation from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and is board-certified in public health and general preventive medicine. In a 2023 policy brief titled "Risking Two Lives—The Dangerous Rise of Chemical Abortion," she wrote that abortion "is corrosive to children, women, and society broadly because it devalues and extinguishes innocent human life," and she criticized the practice of mailing abortion pills across state lines, calling them "Skype abortions."
Her confirmation now depends on a narrow Republican majority in the Senate and a hearing before the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. Washington Senator Patty Murray, a Democrat, has already denounced the pick, calling Overton "a far-right, anti-abortion extremist who has no business leading the FDA." Pro-life organizations, meanwhile, are urging Overton to restrict or withdraw approval of mifepristone entirely once she takes office, and Senator Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) has publicly called on the FDA to reinstate safety regulations around the drug that were loosened in recent years.
A Nation Arguing Over Who Counts
Behind the hearings and the press releases sits a question this country has never fully settled: whether the child in the womb is a person to be protected or a problem to be managed by mail order. A pill delivered in an envelope does not change what it ends. It only makes the ending quieter, harder to see, easier for a watching world to ignore.
My friend, that is the trouble with sin dressed up as convenience. It hides. It arrives in plain packaging. It promises relief and delivers grief that comes later, often alone, often unspoken. The Lord has never been fooled by packaging. He sees the hidden thing and calls it by its name.
Scripture does not treat the unborn as a question mark. It treats the unborn as a person already known.
"Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee." (Jeremiah 1:5)
That is not poetry written to make a point. That is the Lord speaking plainly about a life He had already numbered before it drew one breath of air. If God knew the prophet before he was formed, He knows every child conceived this year, this month, this hour. No committee, no court, no mailed prescription changes that fact.
The debate in Washington will run its course through hearings and votes, and there is real cause to hope that a physician who has stood against the taking of the innocent will now stand at the door of the agency that decides such things. But do not mistake a policy fight for the whole of the matter. The deeper battle is not over what happens at the FDA. It is over what happens in the human heart when it decides another life is disposable.
The gospel does not stop at telling us what is wrong. It tells us what to do about it. Every person reading this has, at some point, valued convenience over conscience, comfort over truth. The remedy was never a new regulation. It was a cross, and a Savior who bore the guilt of every hidden sin so that none of us would have to carry it alone.
If you are burdened tonight by a choice already made, hear this: there is no sin mifepristone can end and no sin the blood of Christ cannot cover. He does not turn away the brokenhearted. He binds them up. Come to Him plainly, as you are, and He will not send you away.
