A thankful heart sees the hand of God in ordinary things. Scripture commands gratitude not because God needs our thanks but because we need to give it; thanksgiving guards the heart against bitterness, worry, and pride. In every thing, Paul writes, give thanks. These passages train the eye to count mercies and the tongue to confess them before the Lord.

1 Thessalonians 5:18
