The Geneva Consensus Declaration began in 2020, in the first Trump administration, as a small group of countries willing to say plainly that no international right to abortion exists. It has grown steadily since, and this June the United States took over as secretariat of the coalition, a role Hungary had held. Argentina and the Dominican Republic number among the recent nations to sign on.
"Life is worthy of protection. Women and girls deserve optimal health. The family is the natural unit of society," Kozma told the assembly. She said the coalition does not require every member nation to share identical laws or culture, only a shared conviction: "Countries are choosing to stand together" on these principles. Dodson added that the current administration "recognizes women and mothers' critical role in society," a marked shift, she said, from the posture of the prior administration.
Kozma and Dodson pointed to concrete steps taken under this framework at home: HHS has ended funding for research using aborted fetal tissue, established conscience protections for medical workers who object to abortion, and rejected physician-assisted suicide as public health policy. Forty-three flags, in a sense, stood behind two women at a podium saying that a nation's laws on life and family are not a matter for outside dictation.
What a Room Full of Nations Cannot Give
Now here is the plain truth behind all that diplomacy, my friend. Forty-three nations can sign a declaration. They can say, in careful language fit for a UN hall, that life is worthy of protection. And they would be right to say it. But no declaration, however many nations put their name to it, can plant the conviction in a single human heart. That conviction has to come from somewhere higher than New York.
Scripture does not treat the unborn child as a matter of policy debate. It treats the child in the womb as a person known, named, and set apart before the world ever saw him.
"Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations." (Jeremiah 1:5)
That word was spoken to Jeremiah, but it tells every one of us something about the God we serve. He does not wait for a body to be born before He takes notice of it. He is at work in the secret place, knitting, forming, calling by name, long before any government official or committee weighs in. The Psalmist said much the same thing: "For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb" (Psalm 139:13). That is not poetry standing in for biology. That is a statement of fact from the mouth of the One who made the womb in the first place.
A coalition of nations can slow a bad policy. It can hold a line at the UN for one more year. Praise God for every hand raised in that room on behalf of the unborn. But the deeper work — the work of turning a heart that once excused the taking of innocent life into a heart that grieves over it and clings to the God who forgives it — that work belongs to the gospel alone. No treaty converts a soul. No declaration washes a conscience clean. Only the blood of Jesus Christ does that.
So take heart if you have stood for life and watched the world call you old-fashioned or worse. You are standing where the Almighty already stood, back before Jeremiah drew his first breath. And if you have ever been party, in word or deed, to devaluing the life God knit together in secret, hear this plainly: there is mercy for that too, full and free, at the foot of the cross. The nations may debate. The Lord has already spoken. He knew you before you were formed, and He is not finished with you yet.
