Paul tells the believer to put on the whole armour of God: truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. The pieces are not ours by nature; they are God's own armour, given to those who will take them up. These passages set out each piece, and the watchful prayer that binds them all together.

18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke.
12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
7 By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,

32 It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect. 33 He maketh my feet like hinds' feet, and setteth me upon my high places. 34 He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms. 35 Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great. thy gentleness...: or, with thy meekness thou hast multiplied me
7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.
4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
